Before this last Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I did not know how to properly honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. Every year it was just another holiday. Don’t get me wrong, I always thought about him and the many individuals who fought for justice and human rights. I would then share some of their inspirational quotes via social media. It would end there. What else was there to do?

Students received time off school, some businesses closed for the day, major shopping outlets held hugely discounted sales, and some people used their three day weekend to be as far away from home as possible.

I don’t blame anyone. I love a three day weekend as much as the next person. But Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than just another three day weekend. It is a day of remembrance and opportunity to serve those around us.
